About Us
Founded in the fall of 2019, the University of Michigan Electric Boat team has been committed to thinking outside of the box and pushing the boundaries of electric marine technology from the beginning. Our early boats focused on efficiency and unique designs, and now we have shifted our focus to speed and breaking records. TiDE, UMEB's most recent build, was built to break the electric water speed record. After 2 years of building, testing, and competing, we fell short of those goals, but grew tremendously as a team, won the electric class at the 2025 Lake of the Ozarks Shootout, and are taking everything we learned from that project into our new builds.
For the 2026-27 season, UMEB is building two new boats. One is an all electric D-Stock hydroplane to come back and compete in our college competition, Promoting Electric Propulsion, for the first time since 2023, with the goal of winning the manned planing division. The other is an all electric F1 tunnel boat, designed to break the record for the furthest distance traveled in 24 hours by an electric boat, chase straight line and circle track electric water speed records, and showcase what is possible with an electric race boat.
Our team is committed to designing and building some of the fastest electric boats in the world, showcasing our passion for innovation and sustainability. We aim to lead the way in the electric marine industry by creating cutting-edge, high-performance electric boats that redefine the possibilities of sustainable marine transportation.
